Monitoring Services and The Facility
The first thing to remember is that monitoring any system is a function of the facility; how much money and technology has been invested. All central stations are not the same. Knowing the right questions to ask when we are unfamiliar with a product is a common problem with all of us. But when selecting a security company to be your partner the central station is a critical component.
How connected is your system to the central station; how much information is sent? How well do they communicate with you when needed, and how willing they are to optimize their services? These are just a few of the things you’ll need to know to get the best value.
Beyond all the technical terms, a critical ingredient is company reputation with the police. The police know which companies respond to customer service needs; it shows in the false alarms they have to respond to unnecessarily. That of course returns us to our theme of quality service.
A U.L. listed central station is the best. This means that Underwriter’s Laboratory checks the facility and insures it meets their guidelines for important and often overlooked qualities you really want. Often called 3rd Party Verification, this includes controlled access to the facility, generator and backup power, technicians available to work on equipment in-house, how the phone systems are set up, system redundancy, even operator to supervisor ratio and more. But after this, it still comes down to your communications with them and theirs with you.
Remember this is about moving information; collecting it, melding it with specific customer information, and distributing it to authorized or emergency personnel. Since transmissions from your system travel at the speed of light, the geographical location of a central station is not so important. In fact, there are distinct advantages of a central station not being in your area if electrical storms, ice storms, or some local catastrophic event causes services to be down.
The force multiplier for monitoring, beyond equipment and features in the facility, is the service department that will support you in making sure your system is properly working. Local service is always more responsive. At Comtec we are on-line in real time with the central station. Since the central station can receive and store many types of signals from your system, having the information available for service personnel is essential for quality service. The Comtec Service Department commonly reviews the related information and decided how to effectively repair a problem before they arrive.
